The story behind an idea that started with a bottle of red wine, a piece of natural cork and the movement of air from a fridge.
Ethicork™ did not begin in a laboratory or with a finished product brief. It began at home in 2023 with a small observation that made me stop and think.
Ethicork™ was invented by Ennovamark founder Matthew Wonnacott after a 2023 observation at home. Air from an opening fridge carried the aroma of red wine from a natural cork that had been left on a nearby table for around eight hours.
Air from an opening fridge carried the aroma of red wine from a natural cork that had been left on a nearby table for around eight hours. The moment prompted him to investigate whether natural cork could become a fragrance medium for passive commercial air care.
After sketches, material tests, prototype development and fragrance testing, the idea became Ethicork™ and contributed to the development of Ennovamark's patent-pending Zoned Dispersal Pathway™ fragrance delivery technology.
I had been hosting at home the night before and a bottle of red wine - a French Bordeaux, if you are wondering - had been left on the wooden side table next to the fridge. The cork was still there beside it.
When I came downstairs the following morning and opened the fridge, the movement of air passed across the table. I could suddenly smell the wine from the cork.
It had been there for around eight hours. The cork was small, yet the aroma was still prominent enough for a slight movement of air to carry it into the room.
My immediate thought was simple: if I could still smell it after eight hours from something so small, what else might be possible?
That was the question that started Ethicork™.

At that point I did not have a refill, a technical process or a commercial air care system. I had an observation and a material that suddenly seemed worth understanding properly.
Cork was familiar to me as a material used to seal and protect wine. It is also used as a closure in some high-end perfumery.
What interested me was something else entirely: could natural cork become the fragrance medium itself?
I wrote the idea down, sketched it and started testing it. One of the earliest tests was simply a flat piece of pure cork. What surprised me was not only how well the cork retained fragrance, but how noticeable that fragrance could be in the surrounding air. That was enough to keep investigating.
One point was important to me from the beginning:
if cork was going to be at the centre of the idea, I wanted the fragrance medium itself to be natural cork.
The observation beside the fridge gave me the question. Turning that question into a working commercial product took much more. I developed and tested a series of refill forms, including cylindrical, tube-shaped and oval concepts.
The challenge was not simply proving that cork could hold fragrance. The refill also had to retain its form, perform over time and work as a practical product within commercial air care.

There was some fun in the development too. I would ask friends in restaurants to guess the material I had found that worked so well with fragrance, telling them that the answer was somewhere in the restaurant - even 'at the bar'.
People guessed glass. Some even guessed food ingredients. Nobody guessed cork.
That reaction stayed with me. Cork is an everyday material that people recognise immediately, but almost nobody thinks of it as a fragrance medium for air care. That was exactly what made the idea so interesting and so attractive to pursue.
As the refill developed, the work also led to something beyond the cork itself.
I wanted the way fragrance moved through and was released from the medium to form part of the invention, rather than relying on the novelty of cork alone. That development led to Ennovamark's patent-pending Zoned Dispersal Pathway™ (ZDP™) fragrance delivery technology.
ZDP™ uses engineered regions within a fragrance medium to influence fragrance movement through the material and its subsequent passive release into the surrounding air. Ethicork™ became its first commercial air care application.

Seeing the final Ethicork™ refill after starting with that small moment at home was genuinely emotional. There was happiness, relief and the slightly strange feeling of holding something that had existed only as an idea, sketches and prototypes.
What began with the smell of wine from a cork had become a purpose-developed commercial air care system using natural cork as its fragrance medium.
The material that prompted the original question had become a functional part of the final product.
The smell of wine from that cork did not give me the finished answer. It gave me the first question.
Everything that followed came from deciding that the question was worth testing - writing it down, sketching it, trying it and continuing through the prototypes and changes needed to turn an observation into a commercial product.
Ethicork™ began with natural cork doing something it had done for centuries: holding the character of what had been placed within it. I simply began to wonder whether it could do something more.

Answers to common questions about the origins of Ethicork™, its development and the thinking behind its cork-based fragrance technology.
Ethicork™ was invented by Matthew Wonnacott, founder of Ennovamark. The idea began with an observation involving red wine, natural cork and airflow at his home in 2023 before progressing through testing and prototype development.
The idea began when Matthew Wonnacott opened a fridge and noticed the resulting air movement carry the aroma of red wine from a natural cork on a nearby table. The cork had been there for around eight hours, prompting him to consider whether natural cork could hold and release fragrance for air care.
The original observation showed that aroma retained within a small natural cork could still be noticeable when air moved around it. Matthew began testing whether cork could become the fragrance medium itself rather than simply acting as a closure or product component.
Matthew wrote down and sketched the idea before testing natural cork and developing a series of prototype refill forms. Continued fragrance testing and product development eventually led to the current Ethicork™ refill and its use as a passive commercial air care system.
Ethicork™ is the first commercial air care application of Ennovamark's patent-pending Zoned Dispersal Pathway™ fragrance delivery technology. The dedicated ZDP™ page explains the technology in more detail.
